#  WGS Alums Win American Studies Prizes

 WGS alum Emily Owens won the John Hope Franklin Prize for her book [Consent in the Presence of Force](https://uncpress.org/book/9781469672137/consent-in-the-presence-of-force/) and alum Jewel Pereyra won the Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize for the best dissertation of the year for her dissertation titled "Afro-Filipina Aesthetics: Transnational Sound Cultures and Dance Performances, 1898-1978".
