Alysia Abbott is the author of Fairyland, A Memoir of My Father, which details her life growing up in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury as the only child of gay poet and writer, Steve Abbott. The memoir was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice, an American Library Association Stonewall Award winner, and a finalist for the Lambda Literary Awards. The New York Times says "Fairyland is a daughter's compassionate, clear eyed reckoning with the truths that defined her singular girlhood at the dawn of the gay liberation movement." Alison Bechdel writes, "Fairyland is a love story that not only brings a new generational perspective to a history we're in danger of forgetting, but irrevocably shifts the way we think about family itself."
Named one of the best books of 2013 by the San Francisco Chronicle, Goodreads, and others, Fairyland is being made into a movie by Sofia Coppola.
Alysia is also co-founder of The Recollectors Project, dedicated to remembering parents lost to AIDS and supporting the children they left behind. You can learn more about this project by listening to her interviews on The Leonard Lopate Show and Here & Now.
