DESCRIPTION:<!--break--><p>	<strong><a href="https://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/people/jewel-pereyra" target="_blank"><span>Jewel Pereyra</span></a> <span><span style="color:black"> (Harvard University)</span></span></strong></p><p>	<strong><span>"Afro-Filipina Aesthetics: Transnational Sound Cultures and Dance Performances"</span></strong></p><p>	<strong><span><span style="color:black">Thursday, October 26, 5:00pm Barker 133 </span></span></strong></p><p>	Examining the understudied poetic, theatrical and musical performances that emerged from transnational contacts between Filipina and Black women performers, <span style="color:black">this presentation adds to scholarship in Philippine and African American performance histories by centering Black and Filipina women’s relational experiences and collective artistry through an invocation of an "Afro-Filipina Chorus."</span></p><p>	<strong><span style="color:black">Bio: </span></strong>Jewel Pereyra is a doctoral candidate in Harvard’s American Studies program, where she holds a secondary in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. As a 2023-24 Radcliffe Institute Graduate Fellow, she will complete her dissertation, “Afro-Filipina Aesthetics: Transnational Sound Cultures and Dance Performances,” which examines the understudied poetic, theatrical, and musical performances that emerged from transnational contacts between Filipina and Black women performers across the twentieth century.</p><p>	<strong>About this Series:</strong><em>  </em><span style="newroman,serif"><em>The 2023-2024 New Directions in Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality seminar series is a forum for discussing new interdisciplinary scholarship in the field of women, gender, and sexuality studies. This year's series focuses on Art &amp; Politics in the Asian Diaspora.
