WGS professor Durba Mitra's recent book was featured in an essay in The Baffler. The essay, Empire and Degradation by Rafia Zakaria, uses Professor Mitra's research to critique former US president Richard Nixon's misogynistic views of Indian women, and to analyze the effect of those views on US involvement in the 1971 Bangladesh independence movement. "There is a straight line between the dehumanization we see in the British colonial history and that of Nixon and Kissinger—and the results in 1971 should not be forgotten" writes Zakaria.
