WGS alum, William J. Simmons has published his first book, Queer Formalism: The Return as the first installment in the Critic’s Essay Series published by Floating Opera Press. Expanding on his essay “Notes on Queer Formalism” from 2013, Simmons' book offers "novel ways of thinking about queer-feminist art outside of the critical-complicit and abstract-representational binaries that continue to haunt contemporary queer art."

Simmons is an art historian, curator, writer, and poet based in Los Angeles, and New York. He earned his secondary field in WGS in 2014, and his senior thesis, "Jimmy DeSana: On the Edge of Postmodernism" won that year's Eugene R. Cummings Senior Thesis Prize in LGBT Studies.
