Caroline Light Quoted in Washington Post's Debate Coverage

October 21, 2016

WGS director of studies Caroline Light spoke to the Washington Post about the historical roots of the phrase “nasty woman” following Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s use of the term to refer to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in this week’s presidential debate.

Prof. Light, who studies the history of race and gender in the U.S., explained that the phrase “dates back to colonial times. A ‘nasty’ woman is one who refuses to remain in her proper place, as defined by men. One who challenges male authority.” She added that the word "nasty" has remained gendered, as “nasty man” does not carry the same cultural weight.
