Contemporary LGBTQ+ TV shows have centered “generation” as a framing device to grapple with changes in experiences and nomenclatures when it comes to non-normative genders and sexualities. The concept of generation is especially productive as it organizes historical time, creates homogenizing effects, enables market niches in a time of neoliberal differentiation and mobilizes affects and imaginations in powerful ways. Yet, for groups which have been largely conceptualized as outside of dominant paradigms of reproduction and futurity, the current embrace of the idea of generation to understand contemporary LGBTQ+ cultures is particularly fraught and significant. We will discuss specific TV shows and a film, focusing on narratives and aesthetics, market strategies, the impact of neoliberal diversity paradigms and specific temporal forms and technologies such as the episode or the camcorder.
